Exciting proposals to enhance open spaces in the area have been unveiled today by South Gloucestershire Council.

The report, published by South Gloucestershire Council, outlines a massive £337,209.88 investment to projects in Chipping Sodbury, Yate, Kingswood, Hanham and Charfield.

The funding comes from developer contributions as new houses are built in the community, with it being specifically allocated towards improving open spaces.

There are eight different projects which will receive funding from the Council's initiatives.

Money contributed from the Peg Hill development in North Yate and the Barnhill Road in Chipping Sodbury will be given largely to improve sporting facilities in the area.

Sodbury Tennis Club will receive £30,540 of funding, made up of money from the two sites, which will help to replace floodlights.

Speaking about the funding allocations in Chipping Sodbury, South Gloucestershire Councillor Rob Creer praised the 'exciting developments' that will happen in the area over the coming months.

"We are really lucky to have fantastic sporting facilities in Chipping Sodbury," he said.

"Having this money to maintain and improve the playing fields at the Ridings as well as the cricket and tennis clubs will mean they can continue being enjoyed for years to come."

In another move, Chipping Sodbury Town Trust will receive over £50,000 to help to improve the quality of playing surfaces at the Ridings Playing Fields.

Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club has also been given £20,060 to help purchased a new roller for maintenance of their playing surfaces.

Yate Bowls Club will receive £3,424.58 in capital and £1,036.52 towards repairs and improvements to the irrigation system from the Stanshawes Drive development in Yate.

Elsewhere Bristol Rovers Supporters Juniors Football Club and Hanham Abbotonians Football Club have each received £35,919.80 and £32,040 respectively.

These investments will help Bristol Rovers Supporters to alter existing changing rooms at their facilities. Hanham FC will now be able to accommodate another three junior teams with the funding, after work will now begin on moving public footpaths to fit in extra pitches.

However, one of the biggest moves Charfield Parish Council and Charfield Memorial Hall will receive £107,330.36 in capital and £32,479.32 in revenue to part fund a new tarmac running track with exercise equipment, fencing around tennis courts, improved access, table tennis and seating.

South Glos Cllr Paul Hughes, cabinet member for leisure and tourism, also stated his 'delight' at the redevelopments and maintenance.

"We are pleased to be able to offer this funding to make improvements that will vastly benefit the communities and the residents and organisations that use them," he said.

"The creation of a new running track in Charfield will be a major asset to the village. It also demonstrates the council’s commitment to supporting the development of Charfield.

"Following England’s successes at the World Cup, so many young minds will be inspired to get active and it is important we have the facilities available to give everyone the chance to take part.

"It is fantastic to also be able to assist the likes of Hanham Abbotonians Football Club and the Bristol Rovers Supporters Junior Football Club in the development of junior sport."
