COULD I add my congratulations to the management and staff of The Pulse leisure centre in Dursley on such a successful year of business.

As leader of Stroud Council at the time the extension to the existing pool was proposed, it was important to recognise the potential of extending the facilities and, despite the deep scepticism of the opposition on both the need and financial grounds, for the Labour, Green and Lib Dem alliance to approve the necessary funding.

Financially, the staff have proved the case for the transformation of the centre.

The need is still there – it’s proven that activity can help improve both physical and mental health.

Unfortunately, for example, according to health survey figures obesity levels in Cam and Dursley are still above the county and national averages.

Personally, one of the first things I did after stepping down as a councillor was to buy a season ticket to The Pulse where I have found the staff to be very friendly and encouraging for beginners.
