ON TUESDAY, City defeated Premier League opposition for the first time in nearly 20 years as we dumped Crystal Palace out of the Capital One Cup with a comfortable 2-1 victory at Ashton Gate.

The last time City knocked a top-flight team out of a cup competition was in 1994 with a famous 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

Whilst this result won’t be remembered in the same way as that one was, it was nevertheless an impressive performance from a young City side against an albeit under strength Crystal Palace.

It was also nice to get one over on Palace’s Gashead manager – and long-time pantomime villain of City fans – Ian Holloway ahead of next week’s Bristol derby.

City were the better side throughout the 90 minutes and Palace looked disjointed and unable to cope with City’s slick passing game and physicality.

In particular, Elliott and Reid bossed the midfield for City. Bristol-born Reid is just 20 years old and 5ft 7, but he put in a mature and physical performance that belied his years and size.

On the left side of midfield another Bristol-born youngster – 19-year-old Bryan – also put in a sterling display, and ran Palace’s right-back ragged all-night. He was able to consistently beat his man and put in some fast, dangerous crosses.

All the goals on the evening were good ones. Emmanuel-Thomas was once again a threat all game and he curled in City’s opener. Then, Wagstaff fired in a half-volley from 20 yards to double the advantage. Palace’s consolation came in the 93rd minute with Garvan’s dipping shot proving to be too good for City debutant goalkeeper Parish who himself had a good game.

On Saturday City travel to Gillingham for the second time this season (3pm). Our visit earlier in August in the Capital One Cup yielded a 2-0 victory and we will be hoping for a similar outcome to gain our first league win of the season.

Then, next Wednesday City face local rivals Bristol Rovers in the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy (7.45pm). City – who have been above Rovers in the league pyramid since 2001 – will look to avenge defeat to their closest rivals in the same competition in 2007. Despite being on Sky TV a large crowd of over 15,000 is expected and the atmosphere is sure to be fantastic with bragging rights up for grabs.
