CITY left it late on Monday night to do some last minute business in the summer transfer window.

First to arrive in the day was James O’Connor from Derby County, on loan until January 13 2014. O’Connor has featured at two of manager O’Driscoll’s previous clubs – Bournemouth and Doncaster Rovers. He joins City after being told he was surplus to requirements by Derby at the end of last season.

Primarily a right-back, O’Connor has also featured across the backline in recent years. He therefore provides useful cover and also hopefully some competition for Moloney in the right-back slot as he has disappointed me so far this season.

With just an hour remaining till the 11pm deadline City secured a second loan signing as Stephen McLaughlin joined from Nottingham Forest until January 2, 2014. The left-sided Irishman can play on both flanks and gives us another option in wide positions. He signed for Forest in January this year a week after O’Driscoll was axed from his managerial post. However, O’Driscoll revealed this week that it was largely him and director of football Keith Burt that were instrumental in scouting and then bringing McLaughlin to Forest.

Departing the club on deadline day was defender Fontaine who, I’m afraid to say, has been a real liability both this season and last. He has suffered a big loss in confidence and it was always going to be best for both parties that he moved on. He links up with Gary Johnson at Yeovil, the man who brought Fontaine to Ashton Gate.

Although it is only a loan deal until January initially, I don’t expect to see Fontaine in a City shirt again with his contract expiring next summer. I wish him all the best at Yeovil and hope he can rediscover some of the form he displayed in his early years at City.

City are without a game this Saturday after calling off the visit of Shrewsbury Town due to International call-ups. The game has been rearranged for Tuesday, September 17 (7.45pm).
