THORNBURY A picked up a surprise walkover win as last season's champions Weston A were unable to field a team due to last minute defections to David Lloyd Long Ashton. Thornbury coming away with 17 points.
Thornbury B put in a solid performance at Bath University coming away victorious. There were comfortable 3-0 wins for Alex McMillan, Mark Toseland and Justin Edwards with Dale Curtis taking his match 3-1.
The stand out performance of the night went to Mark Toseland who was in excellent form and was far too strong for his opponent, dropping only 2 points in a 9-1, 9-1, 9-0 romp.
The result puts the B team second in division 1 with two wins from two. Next up is the all Thornbury battle against the C team.
There was a great result from the enigmatic Thornbury C team to kick off their season in style with a hard fought win against rivals David Lloyd B.
In the absence of stalwart captain Steve Morley his understudy, Ian Talbot, rolled back the years to claim a creditable 3-1 victory against an awkward opponent hitting 'the nick' on regular occasions.
The teams’ number 1 string player, Nigel Tovey was at his wily best, demonstrating his match experience once again and gaining 2 valuable points in a tough 5 game match just losing out 3-2.
At no 2 string, Cliff Hall endured a tough battle with an opponent who had the edge in years eventually losing 3-1.
Pete Bowen had an attritional battle against a tough and aggressive opponent but scraped through with a creditable 3-2 victory for the 4th String which left the match nicely poised at 2-2.
Enter Mick Dixon to play the decisive match at 3rd string, the old warrior delivered a superb result going behind 2-0 but recovering to win in 5, which meant the team won 3-2 with a 16-11 points margin.
Thornbury D faced a strong BAWA team with a weakened side due to injuries in other squads.
Ian Johnson was up first against a tough opponent who took the win 3-0. Meanwhile we welcomed a new player to Thornbury, Lewis Sanders who had a very competitive match but also lost 3-0.
Colin Preece lost 3-2 in a lengthy battle. Nick Clifton won the teams only victory 3-1 against a tricky opponent whilst Viv Bailey-Gard battled hard eventually losing 3-2 after winning the first two games. The final score in the match was 17-7 to BAWA.
Thornbury E team suffered a defeat in their second match against Kingswood A team at UWE. James Jenkins and Graham Dono went down 3-1, followed by defeats for Nigel Ball 3-0 and Bill Ellis 3-2, with the only victor being John Hewitt 3-1. The final score was 17-7 to Kingswood.
