IT'S been another interesting week at Ashton Gate culminating in events on Tuesday that can hopefully give cause for optimism for the remainder of the season.

On Saturday City predictably exited this season’s FA Cup losing 2-0 at Burnley’s Turf Moor.

With a couple of injuries and key players rested including Tammy Abraham it was always going to be a tall order to get a result at the Premier League side, and so it proved.

I awoke on Tuesday morning to find rumours circulating on social media that City were on the verge of signing Bristol Rovers striker Matty Taylor on transfer deadline day.

Deals made between the local rivals are rare to say the least with the last one occurring some thirty years ago.

But as the day went on, it became clear that City had triggered a release cause in Taylor’s contract of approximately £300,000 and he had already passed a medical and was on his way to City.

The deal eventually went through a couple of hours before kickoff. Taylor boasts an excellent goal scoring record for Rovers and has notched 19 times this season alone.

But I think it would be fair to say that he is a ‘punt’ from our perspective as he has never played at Championship level. Here’s hoping he turns out to be a real bargain buy.

We went on to make one more signing on deadline day with former City winger David Cotterill returning to the club on loan for the rest of the season from Birmingham City. We have desperately lacked width of late so this should be a key signing.

Neither player featured in Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday but both will be in the squad for the visit of bottom of the league Rotherham United on Saturday (3pm).

We played ok against Wednesday and it was great to end our losing streak and see Tomlin back in the team. But Saturday’s game is a real must-win against the worst side in the division.
