COTSWOLD Edge Golf Club played host to the County Seniors team this week in their first match in the Channel League campaign.

Home player Vern Chappell, who also is the Seniors County captain this year, was pleased with his team’s win against their visitors from Cornwall 9.5–5.5.

Gary Merchant won the opportunity of going forward to the regional final of the Lombard Trophy, a national competition where competitors play alongside their club professional. Gary scored a nett 66 in the May Medal, also earning himself a 2 shot handicap cut in the process and now moves up into Division 1. May Medal results: Division 1: Willie Cruickshank, net 70, Ben Chappell 71 & Bob Hanks 72; Division 2: Gary Merchant, nett 66, Charlie Gale 70 & Dave Ash 72; Division 3: Trevor Merrick nett 70, Dave Millward on count back from Steve Mayer both with 71. The NGFL team visited Lilley Brook and came off second best on the day whilst the ‘B’ Team were pleased with their victory in the opposing fixture at home 3.5 – 2.5.

Both men and ladies competed in the annual Tombstone Competition on Bank Holiday Monday, a stroke play competition where you play the par of the course, add your handicap and then place a marker where you finish. Junior Lewis Smith took the honours for the Men followed by Gary Merchant and Steve Bishop all with a nett 71. Anne-Marie Bignell headed the ladies field with a nett 69 from Lyn Smart 74 and Jane Barrett 77.

The Seniors May Medal was well supported with under par scores being returned in both divisions: Division 1: Simon Craker on count back from Graham Bartlett, both with nett 69 from Pete Teasdale 70; Division 2: Ian Standbrook on count back from Pete Martin, nett 70 and Dave Millward 72.

Michelle Craker took the honours in the ladies Medal this week with a nett 73 from Heather Morgan and Debbie Pringle, both on 74. The ladies handicap league team welcomed Lilley Brook and were pleased with their 3 – 0 win.
