Yate Town's hopes of reaching the FA Cup First Round were ended on Tuesday night by a tough Salisbury side after losing 1-3.

Paul Britton's team had previously played their counterparts on Saturday, rescuing a draw after going behind.

Dave Sims-Burgess, the hero in Yate's last league game against Cinderford scored a sensational volley after a deep cross found him unmarked at the far post.

As the ball dropped out of the sky, the forward cushioned it back across goal into the bottom corner.

It meant that Salisbury, now managed by former Premier League attacker Steve Claridge, would have to travel to Yate for a replay.

Ross Langworthy returned in attack whilst a midfield packed with star man this season Nick Peare, Joe Guest and Adam Price planned to disrupt the visitors rhythm.

Yate were unbeaten this season going in to the game, with three wins from their first four league games and a comprehensive 3-0 win over Cheddar in the cup, but found themselves undone by some real moments of quality by the away side.

Claridge's men were second best in the first half, with Yate Town playing well in the opening exchanges.

One thing that has stood out for Yate this campaign is how they have made their dominance count in matches.

This tie was no exception, as they opened the scoring just before half time on 40 minutes.

Josh Ford reacted quickest in the box as the visiting goalkeeper Jake Hallett flapped at a corner. The centre back made no mistake and fired in through a crowd of players.

Salisbury equalised just after the restart though, after a penalty was given against Yate, Chris Shephard netted for the hosts giving Ross Grimshaw no chance in goal.

That moment changed everything, the away team could clearly sense the tide had turned and took the lead around 60 minutes when Jacob Wannell notched from close range.

Yate had chances to get back into the game though, with Langworthy and Ollie Mehew doing well.

However the game was put completely to bed when Lewis Benson netted a third goal for the visitors in added time.

There was a sour note at the end of the match as four players received their marching orders before the final whistle.

A strong challenge by Elliot Wheeler caught Sam Boulton and, after most of the players had been involved in a mass flare-up, Salisbury's Wheeler and Darren Mullings and Yate's Mehew and Charlie Hitchings all went back to the changing rooms early.

The result meant that Yate's involvement in the FA Cup is over for another year.

Yate Town now prepare for their next game against Moneyfields at Lodge Road on Saturday.
