WESTBURY HARRIERS have been in action in a series of cross country races, culminating in the Tri Counties Cross Country championships held at Bath University, writes Mike Mewse.

The three-way championships include championships for all age groups in Somerset, Wiltshire and Avon (South Glos, Bath & Bristol areas ).

Sodbury Slog winner Ben Rawlins (Westbury Harriers & South Glos College), a GB triathlete, continued his fine form over 5.6k to win the Avon County Under 20 title. His coach Mike Mewse made it a double celebration as he completed the tough 10.3 k senior men’s course to win the Masters V60 title.

Fellow Westbury Harriers athlete Oli Beal won the Avon senior men’s title with team-mate Anthony Glover, a Northern Ireland Masters international from Chipping Sodbury, close behind.

The Westbury Harriers men’s team all finished strongly to win both the Tri Counties and Avon Championships.

Maria Hobbs from Thornbury was the sole Westbury lady, but ran strongly to win the Female Vet 45 Avon County title

Mike Mewse, Westbury Harriers team manager said: “We have a great group of athletes based in the area. Westbury’s link with Yate AC works well. We train at YOSC and find it’s a successful way of working with athletes across road, cross country and track racing.”

The Westbury Harriers Under 17 men’s team, with three Yate-based athletes – Josh Morland, Josh Wood and Tom Reed, adding to local success with a comprehensive win in the Avon County U17 Men’s Championship.
