Slimbridge 1

Yate Town 4

Yate Town ended a run of two without a win with a ruthless victory over struggling Slimbridge writes Rob Peck.

The score line probably didn’t do justice to the efforts of the Slimbridge team who struggled against the driving rain and high winds in the first half and were unlucky not to pull level early in the second half.

With only three minutes on the clock, Joe Noakes tripped former Swan Ross Langworthy inside the box leaving the referee no option but to award a penalty which Langworthy duly dispatched into the top right corner.

The disastrous start continued for the home side as six minutes later Yate made it 2-0 when Nick Peare received the ball on the right and squeezed the ball past Adams at the near post.

Yate continued to take advantage of the wind, Langworthy forcing Adams into a acrobatic as he tipped the ball over the cross bar.

Slimbridge’s first venture in the opposition half came on 19 minutes, Dan King crossed from the left into the path of Yeshaya Lomotey who was spectacularly denied by Lewis Thomas in the visiting goal with a point blank save with his feet.

Minutes later, the Swans' new signing Mark Magee almost latched onto Lomotey’s cross from the left as they looked to reduce the deficit.

Yet again as Yate used the wind to their advantage Noakes was called upon to block another Langworthy shot to force a corner. Yate hand three attempts on goal from the corner each time the Swans defence held strong.

Slimbridge, with the wind at their backs in the second half, started brightly and on 51 minutes the Swans pulled a goal back, King’s initial shot was blocked but the ball fell kindly to Magee to open his Slimbridge account as he slammed the ball home from inside the box.

Two minutes later the home side were unlucky not to be level when captain Dean Turner struck the post from outside the box.

Despite Slimbridge pressure, Yate increased their lead on 69 minutes as Langworthy latched onto a through ball duped Adams before slotting the ball into an empty net.

The final action of the game saw Yate extend their lead substitute Olly Mehew’s mazy run into the box before laying off the ball to Simms-Burgess who sealed their victory.

Yate are second in Evo-Stik South Division One South while Slimbridge are 18th, just two points clear of danger.
