Cairns Road Cornthians 3 Thornbury Baptist Church 1

Thornbury Baptist Church lost their third game in a row as they fell to defeat against Cairns Road.

Thornbury started well. Sam Nichols fired a good chance straight at the keeper and John Cordle fired wide after a trademark run.

On 24 minutes, Thornbury took the lead when Cordle arrived late in the box. Jimmy Cooke won the ball in the middle and set James Hancox free down the right before he picked out Cordle with a low cross for a simple finish.

Cairns Road equalised moments before half time when Mike Parry latched onto a through ball and got his toe to the ball before being clattered by

Baptist's keeper Davis Newcombe. Newcombe got a hand on the penalty kick but was unable to stop Parry levelling the scores at the interval.

Both sides had decent chances in the second half but Thornbury were unable to convert and Cairns Road took full advantage at the other end when

Thornbury struggled to clear a free kick and after a bit of pinball action in the box, the ball was bundled home. They put the game to bed with a third goal on 80 minutes, counter-attacking a misplaced Thornbury free-kick which allowed veteran striker Chris Spurrey to get on the scoresheet.
