Wotton Under-14 girls were crowned Midlands Regional Champions after finishing the tournament unbeaten, writes Dave Barton.

Wins over Beeston and hosts Worcester – both 3-0 – and a final-game 2-2 draw with Sutton Coldfield ensured they topped the four-club pool to finish the season in style.

Coach Elaine Noone said: “I’m so proud of all the squad this season. Everyone contributed so much throughout the year, not just today. It’s great to win the tournament but as coaches we are just delighted with how well everyone has developed as individual players and a team during the season.”

Roared on by a vocal travelling support, Wotton got off to a flier against Beeston after six minutes when Anya Erasmus made a break, laid the ball off to Immy Sparrow and she fed Niamh Keane, who slotted the ball home.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 when Francesca Barton dribbled her way free in the D and put Millie Toal clear to beat the keeper.

Beeston almost caught Wotton on the counter-attack but captain Eliza Reynolds put in a solid block as the defence held strong with half-time approaching.

Midway through the second half Wotton sealed victory with Erasmus drawing the defenders in the D and creating space for Lena Brewer to smash in Wotton’s third goal.

Worcester looked to be dangerous opponents but the defence of Rosie Brown, Megan and Ruth Gough and Olivia Milne held out.

And it took an own goal after Brewer’s shot was deflected back on target to give Wotton the lead.

It was a tense first half and Ella King pulled off a superb smother save in a one-on-one challenge with a Worcester attacker to keep the New Road side ahead.

Wotton pulled out the stops in the second half with Freya Wallace and Toal pressing hard down the wings and Brewer, Lottie Magrath and Freya Bartlett through the middle.

Brewer made the second goal with a mazy run and lay-off for Barton to steer in.

Toal then wrapped up the scoring with a hit through a crowded D that found its way into the back of the net.

Wotton’s final game against Sutton Coldfield again saw some robust defending, with Brown and Sophie King cutting off attacks, before Toal took the ball down the opposition’s end and Erasmus finished off in the 12th minute.

A training ground short corner routine worked to perfection with Reynolds injecting and Sparrow laying off the ball to Erasmus to slap home for a 2-0 half-time lead.

Wotton fought a rear-guard action for the last quarter of the game with Ella King saving a point-blank shot before Sutton scored twice in the last five minutes to claim the draw.

However, it was too late to prevent another great day for W-u-E.
