MINNOWS Thornbury Town have their own chance of FA Cup glory having been accepted into the competition for the first time in their history.

Thornbury make the long trip to Bedfordshire on Saturday, August 10 to play Leighton Town of the South Midlands League Premier Division.

The Thorns will also make their debut in the FA Vase when they entertain fellow Hellenic League side Cheltenham Saracens.

The winners will then travel to Wokingham & Emmbrook or Chipping Sodbury in the next round.

Boss Jason Rees, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be taking part in such a prestigious competition. All credit should go to the squad and Andy Davies for getting us this far. We hope to play our part in this year's FA Cup story.”

Media manager Tom Shorey, added: "By playing in the Emirates FA Cup and the Buildbase FA Vase, not only does it help the club financially but will also boost our awareness and hopefully inspire to local community to get behind the club in these national competitions."

Thornbury kicked-off their pre-season schedule with a 1-1 draw against Gloucestershire County League new boys Sharpness. The Sharks took the lead on seven minutes with a fine goal from Alex Gaynor, but Thornbury netted parity when Toby Bennett scored direct from a free-kick.

Thornbury make the trip to Toolstation Western League side Bishop Sutton on Saturday, kick-off 3pm, whilst next Tuesday they entertain Hallen, kick-off 7.30pm.
