Forest Green beat Oldham Athletic 1-0 in their League Two season-opener- but how did we rate the players?

Ratings out of 10

Lewis Thomas 7 Surprisingly given the nod ahead of Adam Smith. Little to do throughout but managed the game well and looked more than capable with the ball at his feet. A promising first game in the Football League and a clean sheet to go with it.

Dom Bernard 6 Eager to get forward. Solid as a rock when called to defend. The former Birmingham City man will be satisfied with his debut.

Farrend Rawson 6 Crucial early block, but a comfortable afternoon for the burly defender, who will benefit from playing alongside the experienced Matt Mills this season.

Nathan McGinley 6 Neat and tidy, but his lung-busting runs from deep were not seen today.

Matt Mills 7 The wise old head at the back was rarely troubled during a solid debut for the former Reading and Notts Forest defender – his guile will be vital in cajoling a team full of youthful exuberance.

Joe Mills 8 Fantastic bit of skill to kill the ball and tee-up Taylor Allen for the winner. Always eager to drive forward. However, the new Rovers captain will be frustrated by a couple of uncharacteristic deliveries from set-plays.

Kevin Dawson 6 Combative on his debut for Rovers following his switch from arch-rivals Cheltenham Town. Added a bit to Rovers’ midfield engine room.

James Morton 7 The Bristol City loanee was always eager to get on the ball and showcase his ball spraying skills from midfield in his first competitive match for Rovers.

Aaron Collins 6 Rovers’ new number 10 started the game brightly enough and looked a threat. His debut for Rovers ended just after the hour.

George Williams N/A His contribution ended after two minutes following an over-zealous lunge from Oldham’s Zak Mills. It was later revealed that Williams had sustained a broken left leg and a potential season-ending scenario for one of Rovers’ pivotal players.

Shawn McCoulsky 6 Scintillating pre-season goalscoring form raised the bar. The former Bristol City striker sprung to life after the break and looked a real threat. Replaced by new striker Matty Stevens with 13 minutes to go.

Subs:

Junior Mondal 5 Ushered on after five minutes due to loss of the stricken Williams. Speedster Mondal struggled to get into the game, but worked his proverbial socks off.

Taylor Allen 7 A stunning match-winning debut from the rookie 19-year-old striker. And what an immediate impact - a sumptuous strike handed Rovers the lead within seven minutes of entering the New Lawn arena. Almost grabbed a second moments later but was denied by the sprawling hands of Gary Woods.

Matty Stevens 6 Signed earlier in the week from Peterborough United. Little time to catch the eye in a brief cameo up top.

Subs not used: Adam Smith, Dayle Grubb, Ebou Adams, Liam Kitching.
