Transfer deadline days have generally been uneventful for City fans over the years but last Thursday proved an exception as there was dramatic last minute business in and out of Ashton Gate, writes Will Collins.

The day started with Adam Nagy signing from Bologna. The 24-year-old Hungarian international is a defensive minded midfielder who comes with a reputation for playing a high energy, short passing game.

There had been rumours for several weeks that City were leading the race to sign young Arsenal starlet Eddie Nketiah on loan. City desperately needed a striker this summer but had left it late. Nketiah was due for a medical last Wednesday but didn’t show. It then materialised that Leeds United had shown a late interest in the player and he had opted to join the Yorkshire club instead. This was a bitter blow, but with barely an hour of the window left City pounced to sign Stoke City’s Benik Afobe on loan for the season. Afobe is a quality striker on his day and will doubtless get plenty of goalscoring opportunities in Lee Johnson’s side.

With the seconds ticking down to 5pm there were two big shocks. Firstly, it was announced that City’s midfield stalwart Marlon Pack was joining rivals Cardiff City. Pack has been a great servant to the club over six years but the rumoured fee totalling £4m is great business for a player that cost us £100k. The second surprise was Jamie Paterson’s departure on loan to Derby County. The former Forest player has been a key squad member but City do now have plenty of options in attacking midfield with Kasey Palmer and Sammy Szmodics joining earlier in the summer.

City face QPR for the second time in five days on Saturday at Ashton Gate (3pm). QPR beat us on penalties in the EFL Cup following an entertaining 3-3 draw on Tuesday night, however both teams made 8 changes to their usual first team line-ups. City will be keen to get their first win of the season before a tough trip to Derby County next Tuesday (7.45pm).
