A first win on the road was Rovers’ reward for a determined performance at Lincoln last Saturday, writes Stephen Knowlson.

The Gas travelled to Sincil Bank without an away point or a goal to our name in contrast to our unbeaten start at home, so the team had their work cut out to contain their high-flying hosts. Graham Coughlan brought in Mark Little to replace Josh Hare at right back and kept faith with our dangerous front pairing of Nichols and Clarke-Harris.

Despite losing their high-achieving management duo the Cowley brothers to Huddersfield earlier in the week, the home side made the early running with some decent possession and a handful of early shots without really troubling Jaakkola in the Rovers goal – although they had a shout for a penalty after Clarke-Harris possibly handled a deflected Bostwick shot - but overall the Gas gave as good as they got in what was an uninspiring first half.

Rovers steadily grew into the game in the second 45 built on a solid defensive foundation and the midfield industry of Upson, Clarke and Ogogo. The breakthrough came when Eardley was adjudged to have brought down Nichols in the box and Clarke-Harris made no mistake from the spot, taking his League One tally to five.

The Imps were lacklustre for the rest of the game as Rovers grabbed a valuable three points on the road to lift us into mid-table. It was a good away performance, especially from the back three of Davies, Kilgour and Craig, and Gasheads must be excited to have a genuine goal scorer regularly hitting the back of the net in Jonson Clarke-Harris.

Last Tuesday, Rovers hosted Gillingham under the floodlights of the Memorial Stadium as we looked to continue our unbeaten home record. Tyler Smith partnered Clarke-Harris up front and it was he who put Rovers ahead on the 38th minute with some fancy footwork and a neat finish into the bottom corner.

Frustratingly, we conceded another late goal that the Gills barely deserved and had to settle for a share of the points – the second home game in a row where we’ve conceded late. The result leaves us comfortably mid-table, nine points from the dropzone and just two from the playoff positions.

Next up is an away trip to struggling AFC Wimbledon this Saturday.
