Cirencester's Phoenix Blue walking football team reached the semi-finals of WFA National Over 70 Finals, before falling to the eventual winners.

Sixteen teams travelled to Worcester from all over England, including from Norwich, Exeter, Portsmouth, Birmingham and Nottingham, to take part in the competition.

Despite being drawn in a tough looking group, that included Birmingham and Portsmouth, Phoenix played good passing football to remain unbeaten, winning two of their three games.

They finished in the top two group places without conceding a goal to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Playing local rivals Abbeymead Rovers, it turned out to be a close fought affair that finished goalless, but Phoenix Blue finally won through, winning 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out after Eddie Butler produced a superb save.

In the semi-final they were up against the 2018 finalists Bramcote from Nottingham. Again it was a very close match but Phoenix lost 1-0 to the only goal they conceded in the competition.

Bramcote eventually won the trophy beating the holders, Portsmouth, in the final.

However, it was a very creditable performance from the local side, up against teams with far larger memberships than themselves.
