Mark Cooper hailed Forest Green's 'outstanding' all-round defensive display as his side grabbed three vital points to keep on the coat tails of leaders Crewe Alexandra and surprise packet Cheltenham Town.

Second-half goals from sub Jack Aitchison and a stoppage-time second from Liam Shephard moved Rovers up to third in the League Two standings, level on points with Cheltenham and two points behind leaders Crewe, who Cooper's side welcome to the New Lawn this weekend.

"After Saturday, we were a bit anxious and I felt I had to give the players a hand and put on another midfielder player, with always an eye on changing it on 65 minutes with two forwards," revealed Cooper in his post-match interview at the Globe Arena.

"I thought defensively we were outstanding, and the players carried out everything we wanted superbly well.

"It was a great bit of play again with Matty Stevens and he waited for the right moment and produced the killer pass for a wonderful finish from Shep (Liam Shephard)."

And Cooper purred after Rovers settled the game in the dying embers.

"It was a fantastic ball from Joe Mills, who shaped up as if he was going to smash it across the face of goal and played a lovely reverse pass and Jack (Aitchison) has sent the lad for a packet of crisps and put it in the other corner and got a deflection."
