BRISTOL CITY finally recorded their first win at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday and in doing so ended a 17-year wait for a win in the Welsh capital.

Prior to 2002 we had a fantastic record at Cardiff’s old ground Ninian Park but until Sunday trips to the Bluebirds’ new ground had been less than enjoyable.

Cardiff hadn’t lost at home all season but there has been pressure mounting on manager Neil Warnock due to indifferent results and the fact he has announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season to enter retirement. This result won’t have helped appease those supporters that are frustrated with Warnock as City put in a controlled, if unspectacular, performance in against their Welsh rivals.

City had the better of the opening 20 minutes, which often seems to be the case. But there is no doubting Cardiff had the better of the second half of the first period with Hoilett coming closest when he hit the crossbar from outside the box.

Early in the second half the woodwork came to City’s rescue again, this time Bacuna with the strike. But it was Brownhill for the Robins that had brought his shooting boots and the 23 year old hit an unstoppable thunderbolt from 25 yards to settle the game on 67 minutes. Brownhill hadn’t been playing particularly well up until this point but he can be forgiven for scoring such an important goal in the Severnside derby.

City saw the game out with relative ease and there were big celebrations at the final whistle with former Swansea City man Ashley Williams particularly enjoying the moment.

Williams has been superb of late and his outstanding performances are part of the reason City have lost just two of their 16 league games. We have solid foundations and should be in the promotion shake-up come next April.
