Instead of taking charge for the visit of Peterborough United on Saturday, Joe Dunne followed Graham Coughlan out of the Memorial Stadium for Mansfield leaving Bristol Rovers without a manager or assistant manager for the home tie against their free-scoring promotion rivals, writes Steve Knowlson.
Kevin Maher took the reins against the in-form Posh and found his team on the back foot as the visitors took the game to Rovers in the first half. Rollin Menayese made a last-ditch tackle to deny Ivan Toney on 38 minutes and the Gas had little to offer in attack but kept their rivals largely at arms-length with a solid defensive display.
Rovers came into the game a little more after the break and started asking questions of their own, especially when Jonson Clarke-Harris was introduced from the bench just after the hour mark.
Jaakkola pulled off a great stop to deny Mo Eisa before Ollie Clarke had a great opportunity to grab all three points moments from time but was denying by a fine save from Pym in the Peterborough goal.
The game finished goalless which was a fair result – Rovers being one of only three teams which have kept a clean sheet against the Posh in the league this season. The draw keeps us in fourth but now just a single point off the top two with a game in hand.
That’s 11 games unbeaten in all competitions now for the Gas, surely an attractive prospect for a new manager. Normally clubs are on the hunt for a new gaffer when they’re in trouble, but the strange circumstances surrounding Coughlan and Dunne’s departures mean that Rovers are searching for a new manager and assistant whilst being genuine promotion contenders and still involved in two cup competitions.
Whether a new appointment is made before the busy Christmas fixture list remains to be seen – Ben Garner, Paul Heckingbottom, Paul Tisdale, Chris Hargreaves have all been mentioned as candidates for the Gas hot seat; whoever it is will have an excellent, hard-working team in an enviable league position to work with. Merry Christmas to all Gasheads everywhere!
