Thornbury Town Reserves have been promoted for the second successive season.

Victory over Iron Acton ensured Town would be playing in the Bristol & District Senior Division next year, and with two games of the season left they are still in with a chance of securing the Bristol and District League Division One title.

Iron Acton were much more resolute than in their 9-0 defeat on the opening day of the season and defended brilliantly throughout, with some smart saves from their keeper.

Cam Drew was the first to test the home defence after he got in behind and crossed to the back post, but Matt Constable was unable to get on the end of it.

Next Tom Manley drilled a shot down the keeper's throat and Harrison Young was denied when one-on-one with the keeper making another good save.

The breakthrough eventually came when Henry Bennett launched a long throw in to the back post where it was met by an acrobatic strike from Ollie Wilson.

Minutes later Wilson beat his man and fired his effort narrowly wide. The home keeper pulled off another magnificent save from a Tom Clare header but following the resulting corner Clare was bought down and the referee pointed straight to the penalty spot. Up stepped Young for the spot kick however the keeper guessed the right way and made a strong one-handed save to keep the score 1-0 at half-time.

Town started the second half strongly but the hard bobbly surface made it difficult to control the ball and really create any chances of note. The same could be said about Iron Acton with the majority of the game being played in the middle of the pitch.

Iron Acton had a free kick from distance which was dealt with by George Huke in defence, and Lestyn Farley in goal for town was quick off his line to prevent the hosts from equalising.

Town then started to get into the final third with Jake Barton, Matt Constable and Ollie Wilson linking up, unfortunately the final ball wasn’t quite good enough for Town to get a second goal.

Deep into the second half Town did get a second when Tom Clare got on the end of another Cam Drew corner, the resulting header this time hit the back of the net and made the score 2-0.

Clare almost added another but this time his header was well saved by the keeper on the line.

Felix Brittain done very well to set up Henry Bennett down the right who saw his shot well saved. Bennett squared the rebound to Cam Drew who chipped over from 12 yards.

Town managed to get a third when Jake Budd found Harrison Young who in turn played in Cam Drew who took it into the box and slid it past the onrushing keeper.

Town managed to create a final chance when Dan Da Silva kept the ball in play by the corner flag, his pass back found Cam Drew who crossed onto the head of Henry Bennett who couldn’t quite find the top corner.

Town are at home to Tormarton this evening. Kick off at the Mundy Playing Fields is at 7.30pm.
