Chipping Sodbury returned to winning ways with a thrilling victory over the previously undefeated Shirehampton.

Skipper Jamie Rendell had no hesitation in batting first and it looked like a sound decision before James Hicks was caught out for 11.

After smashing ten fours and three sixes, a tiring Rendell was trapped lbw for a fantastic 86.

At 125-2 with 20 overs to go, Sodbury were in a strong position but Wake soon followed for a cautious 22 and they then capitulated to 150-6.

Matt Webb (11) and Steve Clapp (16*) stemmed the wicket loss and it allowed Sodbury a final counter-attack as 18 were scored off the final two overs.

The Shirehampton openers got off to an electric start with 50 on the board off just eight overs.

However, Jamie Wakefield picked up the crucial first wicket and then Steve Clapp and Jay Penfold bowled superbly in tandem.

Clapp picked up two quick wickets and finished with 2-28 from ten overs. Penfold also chipped in to end up with 2-49 from his 13 overs.

Shire still had wickets in hand and needed 56 from the final eight overs.

However, the re-introduction of Jamie Wakefield finally swung the game back in Sodbury’s favour as he took two wickets in two balls.

Despite a late partnership with 30 from the final three overs, including 15 from the last over, it proved too much for Shire as Wakefield held his nerve to finish with 3-42.

Bristol & North Somerset Division 2nd XI Shirehampton (176) lost to Chipping Sodbury (193-9) by 17 runs

The seconds recorded a slightly more comfortable victory over Shirehampton.

Sodbury batted first and were indebted to Lee Walters (66) as they posted a competitive 193 from their 45 overs.

Walters was in fine form, timing the ball sweetly with a flurry of boundaries, and he was well supported by Paul Crabtree (22), Richard Wood (43) and Mark Graham (23).

In reply, Sodbury were given a great start by Chris Willoughby (3-49) and Bradley Arkwright, who both bowled with great maturity to remove the home side’s top order.

It was then veteran Tony Garton’s turn to take centre stage as his experience saw him take three important wickets as Sodbury kept the pressure on Shire.

Arkwright was then bought back into the attack to finish the job he had started and he ripped out the Shirehampton’s tail end to finish with the fantastic figures of 4-39 from 12 overs and to see Sodbury home with 17 runs to spare.

Steve Doidge plundered a magnificent unbeaten 103 as Chipping Sodbury beat Failand and Portbury.

Rob Long (29) and Mike Pearson (28) gave Sodbury a solid start but then Doidge took the home side’s attack apart with brute force and he received excellent support from Steve Febry (31) and captain Mike Garton (19*).

The Failand response was valiant but they were always chasing the game and were never in with a chance of victory at any stage.

Alex Tebbitt picked up two wickets but it was the work done by the Sodbury batsmen and Doidge in particular that set up this welcome win.

Bedminster got off to a quick start start but Matt Calicott toiled away for 15 hard overs to claim 3-39 and Craig Hambly (2-41) chipped in as well.

With the game finely balanced it was young Jamie Pearson with 3-15 from five overs who showed nerves of steel and deadly accuracy to dash the visitors’ hopes and lead Sodbury to victory.

The evergreen Tony Bridgeman gave him vital support at the top of the order with 12 and then Ben Weaver (14) continued his fine form late on to give the Sodbury total some respectability.

Bitton had no answer to the Sodbury attack and it was Hughes with a devastating spell of 5-22 who did the most damage as they were dismissed for just 118.
