BEN Rawlins from Yate has been selected to represent Great Britain Triathlon’s U20 team in the World Aquathlon championships in Denmark – a 1,000m open water swim followed by a 5k run.
Many of the top triathletes now compete in aquathlon as an important part of the full event.
Ben clinched his GB place with a great performance in the Tewkesbury Aquathlon, winning the 400m swim and 5k run event in a new course record of 21.39.
Before switching to the full triathlon Rawlins, a member of Westbury Harriers and Yate AC, will concentrate on the World, European and British aquathlon (swim/run) Championships for the aquathlon.
Rawlins has had a strong winter season, working on his swimming with Southwold Swimming Club and running for Westbury Harriers, SGS College and Avon Schools in cross country.
He has also managed to fit in some speed work with a 3,000 metre indoor win for SGS College at the southern area students championships.
Ben’s coach Mike Mewse, of Westbury Harriers, said “It’s been a lot of hard work to get to this stage – and the aim is for Ben to do well in the World Championships before adding in bike training and then move to full triathlons.
“Ben is talented but also has a great work ethic – he deserves the recognition.
“He will represent his country with determination and pride.”
