AN innovative art teacher at local school is bucking the trend to inspire the next generation into careers they might not have considered, writes Jess Donovan from Sir Bernard Lovell Academy.

These murals made by Mr Pickering took around 10 hours to make and look wonderful displayed around SBL.

Mr Pickering started his journey in Manchester as a SEND staff and made it to become an amazing part of the teaching staff at Sir Bernard’s Lovell Academy as an art teacher.

Creating a mural takes many parts: there is the designing, sketching and the final product. His journey all started wanting to become a PE teacher but instead got into art.

After SBL he aspires to make his own art. He has been interested in everything visual from a very young age, he has always loved drawing and started drawing cartoons from a very young age also.

When he was in secondary school he wanted to be a PE teacher because he loved sports and his mum was a teacher which gave him the idea of the career path.

After working in learning support in Manchester they offered him the position of a GCSE art course teacher so his love for teaching art began.

He made one for the entrance of the attendance office one for each art display and one for each house.

Most of them were done over the summer in his free time. The mural at the entrance represents the school because it is the Sir Bernard satellite.

The murals are of and why they are interesting. The murals are interesting because they are trying to break down stereotypes and celebrate diversity in society, as well as showing students at SBL that you don't have to be a man to be an engineer or a woman to be a nurse.
